Hysteresis of the intertropical convergence zone to CO2 forcing

چکیده
With the unprecedented rate of global warming in recent decades, whether or not anthropogenic climate change is irreversible an important question. Based on idealized CO2 ramp-up until 1,468 ppm and symmetric ramp-down model experiments, here we show that intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) does respond linearly to forcing, but exhibits strong hysteresis behaviour. While location ITCZ changes minimally during period, it moves sharply south as soon begins decrease, its centre eventually resides Southern Hemisphere period. Such associated with delays energy exchanges between tropics extratropics. The delayed are explained by two distinct behaviours Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation slower warming/cooling Ocean. We also suggest can lead regional hydrological cycles. In experiments where increases four-fold before returning original level, temperature precipitation almost linear responses forcing. contrast, response Intertropical Convergence Zone lags behind changes, exchanges.

Titanium and iron concentration data from the anoxic Cariaco Basin, off the Venezuelan coast, can be used to infer variations in the hydrological cycle over northern South America during the past 14,000 years with subdecadal resolution. Following a dry Younger Dryas, a period of increased precipitation and riverine discharge occurred during the Holocene "thermal maximum." Since approximately 54...
متن کاملDynamics of the Intertropical Convergence Zone of the East Pacific
The dynamical factors controlling the mean state and variability of the east Pacific intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and the associated cross-equatorial boundary layer flow are investigated using observations from the East Pacific Investigation of Climate (EPIC2001) project. The tropical east Pacific exhibits a southerly boundary layer flow that terminates in the ITCZ. This flow is induce...
متن کاملEnergetic Constraints on the Width of the Intertropical Convergence Zone
The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) has been the focus of considerable research in recent years, with much of this work concerned with how the latitude of maximum tropical precipitation responds to natural climate variability and to radiative forcing. The width of the ITCZ, however, has received little attention despite its importance for regional climate and for understanding the general...
متن کاملDynamics of Disturbances on the Intertropical Convergence Zone
The dynamics of disturbances on a theoretically derived Intertropical Convergence Zone are studied. Radiative cooling over a hemisphere is parameterised by a Newtonian cooling law, relative to a radiative equilibrium temperature which decreases from equator to pole. Release of latent heat of condensation in the tropics is treated as a function of convergence in the planetary boundary layer. The...
متن کاملEnergetic Constraints on the Position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone
The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) can shift meridionally on seasonal and longer time scales. Previous studies have shown that the latitude of the ITCZ is negatively correlated with cross-equatorial atmospheric energy transport. For example, the ITCZ shifts southward as theNorthernHemisphere cools and the northward cross-equatorial energy transport strengthens in response. It has remaine...
